2017 Season<\/strong><br>\n<strong> March 16,&nbsp;2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Greet\u00adings and hap\u00adpy almost spring! Wel\u00adcome to the 2017 wild\u00adflower sea\u00adson! Because of the much need\u00aded rain and the cold\u00ader weath\u00ader on Figueroa Moun\u00adtain, the wild\u00adflow\u00aders are get\u00adting a late start. This is very com\u00admon for a wet year. With this said, while the wild\u00adflow\u00aders are start\u00ading to bloom, there real\u00adly aren\u2019t that many yet, but final\u00adly enough for a short report. Keep in mind that most of the wild\u00adflower that are cur\u00adrent\u00adly bloom\u00ading are in the low\u00ader ele\u00adva\u00adtion, below 3,000 feet, with the excep\u00adtion of the south fac\u00ading slopes, which get the sun shine most of the&nbsp;day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A friend\u00adly reminder before we begin. When you stop to look and take pic\u00adtures of all the beau\u00adties, please make sure that you park on the shoul\u00adder of the road and not on the road itself. If there isn\u2019t a place to stop, find a turn-out and walk back to the area. Please do not block the road at any time as this will be enforced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ready to start our tour? Let\u2019s&nbsp;go!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Start\u00ading at the first cat\u00adtle guard, shiny but\u00adter\u00adcups, milk maids, blue dicks, delight\u00adful fies\u00adta flow\u00aders, fid\u00addle\u00adnecks, John\u00adny jump-ups, fil\u00adla\u00adree and min\u00aders let\u00adtuce are in bloom. In fact, I even spied a lomatium, 2 lupine and gold\u00aden yarrow hid\u00ading among the tall grass. These same flow\u00aders can be spot\u00adted all the way through to the enchant\u00adi\u00adng tree canopy area, only add pop\u00adcorn flow\u00aders to this love\u00adly&nbsp;mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As you con\u00adtin\u00adue up the hill, beau\u00adti\u00adful Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia pop\u00adpies are begin\u00adning bloom. In fact, look to your left and see the stun\u00adning orange patch work on the top por\u00adtion of Grass Moun\u00adtain. Grass Moun\u00adtain put on quite a show last year. Let\u2019s&nbsp;see<br>\nwhat it does this year. Right before you get to the rusty gate, look to the right and find some tiny cream cups in bloom, along with fil\u00adla\u00adree and a few poppies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Oth\u00ader wild\u00adflow\u00aders to look for as you con\u00adtin\u00adue your uphill climb include, Cean\u00adoth\u00adus, but\u00adter\u00adcups, fid\u00addle\u00adneck, fil\u00adla\u00adree, blue dicks, a few lupine, car\u00adpets of gold\u00adfields, stun\u00adning orange wall flow\u00aders along the rocky hill on the right, shoot\u00ading stars, and coreopsis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At Vista Point (large grav\u00adel turnout about 11.4 miles from the bot\u00adtom), everyone\u2019s favorite, the exquis\u00adite choco\u00adlate lilies are in bloom, be care\u00adful not to step on them so that oth\u00ader may enjoy them. Also look for shoot\u00ading stars, gold\u00adfields and fil\u00adla\u00adree. I even spot\u00adted a cou\u00adple of wild onions. In the ser\u00adpen\u00adtine area across Vista Point and along the road lead\u00ading to the sta\u00adtion, you\u2019ll see Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia pop\u00adpies, but\u00adter\u00adcups, blue dicks, core\u00adop\u00adsis, gold\u00aden yarrow and wild onions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As you pass the sta\u00adtion, fields of gor\u00adgeous shoot\u00ading stars can be seen, rang\u00ading in col\u00ador from deep magen\u00adta to pur\u00adple to the occa\u00adsion\u00adal white blooms. But\u00adter\u00adcups can also be spot\u00adted&nbsp;here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the field to the right, before Tun\u00adnell Ranch Road, look for pop\u00adpies and buttercups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">About a half mile fur\u00adther, the infa\u00admous pop\u00adpy hill\u00adside is about one quar\u00adter filled. This year the pop\u00adpies in this area appear small\u00ader, but still beau\u00adti\u00adful. It also seems as though they will be shar\u00ading the spot\u00adlight with love\u00adly lupine this&nbsp;year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we con\u00adtin\u00adue on Figueroa Moun\u00adtain Road to the Davy Brown trail\u00adhead, there is lit\u00adtle to see. Look for a few pop\u00adpies, Cean\u00adoth\u00adus and a cou\u00adple of pur\u00adple night\u00adshades, which can be seen on the hill\u00adside, right before the trailhead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">About one half mile fur\u00adther, you will find some col\u00ador\u00adful fields, hous\u00ading beau\u00adti\u00adful shoot\u00ading stars, lomatium and buttercups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From this point, there is very lit\u00adtle to report. From Ranger Peak to Cachu\u00adma Sad\u00addle, because of the high\u00ader ele\u00adva\u00adtion, the flow\u00aders are just start\u00ading to bloom. One might see an occa\u00adsion\u00adal bush pop\u00adpy, few Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia pop\u00adpies, a cou\u00adple of bush lupine, some wild canyon peas can be spot\u00adted in a few loca\u00adtions and some pur\u00adple night\u00adshade towards the Cachu\u00adma Sad\u00addle side. While just start\u00ading, the bush lupine should be putting on quite a dis\u00adplay in about 3 weeks or so. Stay&nbsp;tuned!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sun\u00adset Val\u00adley has even less to report for right&nbsp;now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As for the flow\u00aders on Hap\u00adpy Canyon Road, like Sun\u00adset Val\u00adley and the stretch between Ranger Peak and Cachu\u00adma Sad\u00addle, the wild\u00adflow\u00aders are just wak\u00ading up. One can see a few Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia pop\u00adpies, an occa\u00adsion\u00adal bush pop\u00adpy and pur\u00adple night\u00adshades. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, the sec\u00adtion of road that real\u00adly is spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar is the two mile dirt por\u00adtion of Hap\u00adpy Canyon that is only rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded to high clear\u00adance vehi\u00adcles. Because this two mile sec\u00adtion is at around 2500 feet ele\u00adva\u00adtion and is south fac\u00ading, one can see Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia pop\u00adpies in both bril\u00adliant orange and bright yel\u00adlow. The yel\u00adlow ones can be seen in large patch\u00ades towards the top of the hill\u00adsides. There are also core\u00adop\u00adsis, blue dicks and shoot\u00ading stars bloom\u00ading in this&nbsp;area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That\u2019s all for this update.
