Tom was leading one of his AIDS/LifeCycle training rides today. At 7:30 he, his co-leader Robert, rider Jen and I met at his house, loaded the bikes and all the gear into and onto the Volvo and headed out for Ellen’s Danish Pancakes in Buellton. Arriving Robert and I went immediately inside for breakfast along with a nice chat.

Nine o’clock and all set to go we all rode off, out Santa Rosa Road to Hwy 1, then south on 1. Nearing Hwy 101 I left the other riders to continue their loop ride back to Solvang and on to Buellton while I cruised down the coast home to Carpinteria, 81 miles for the day. My most in quiet a while. A wonderful, warm to hot day. Perfect riding weather for me.

A gallery of some shots from our ride is seen above. Click on any one to see an enlarged version after which you can leftside and rightside click to view the rest.

Through yesterday I had accumulated 421 miles for the month of January, my second highest number of miles in any January after the 478 miles in 2003. Today I was going to drive down to Los Angeles to visit friend Carol so was settled on 421 for the month. But ANON! Carol was not feeling chipper so asked that I come down Saturday instead. What to do with my now “free day”. Bingo, I’ll ride 60 miles and set a new personal high for January. So off I pedal to Santa Barbara for some banana/wheatgerm pancakes at the East Beach Grill where I decide that riding down to Ventura for lunch and then home would accumulate the miles I sought. It was a nice 60 miles with lots of wonderful views, interactions, and contemplations.

Note: I continue having a problem with my new slideshow technique. The original slideshow lays on top of my new one. So for now please click anywhere outside the initial image presented to remove the old version and allow my new one to get center stage, thanks.

I’ve been getting a little bored riding the same old routes from home so today drove the bike down to Ventura to ride the nice Ojai Valley Bike Trail into and through Ojai two miles for a great lunch at Boccali’s. Returning to Main Street I rode on down to the wonderful Ventura ocean promenade where I joined a large crowd watching the expert surfers in the high, 12–15 foot, waves before returning to the Volvo after a nice 37 mile outing. Click on any of these thumbnails to view large images (complete with meaningful comments).

Friend Carla invited me to join her on the monthly public hike on the Sedgewick Reserve. We were all set to leave with the moderate level hike group when the leader heavily cautioned any of is without lugged soles to not come on his route. So we moved over to the easy group and had a very interesting experience. A very nice feeling of being way into the country and curious insight into how others lived and grew up.

A snippet of my Excel speadsheet bike mileage is shown below representing lots of pedal to the metal (literally). How I came to 2,727 miles for 2013 is a study in constantly resetting the carrot being chased as well as lots of compulsive bike riding. The six instances of moving the carrot further and yet further out of reach are described forthwith.

  1. It’s the end of September and I am thinking Yikes! You slacker, you need to at least get over 2,000 miles for the year
  1. Cranking more in October 2,000 miles seems a given so I move the carrot out to 200 miles/month. By December I have 2,165 and the weather demands getting out, so out I go (and go and go and …)
  1. I hit 2,400 miles on 12/15 with 235 for the month and the carrot slides to 406/month, the most miles in a 2013 month
  1. A Christmas day ride moves me to 401 miles so the carrot shifts to 456 to be my second largest total for a December
  1. Boxing Day and 53 more miles brings me to 453 miles so the carrot jumps again, to 556, the most in 9.5 years as well as the most post heart attack. I also notice that I’m nearing the 2010 total of 2,725 so the carrot jumps over to that column to accomplish both goals. Why not?
  • After a ride on 12/30 I’m at 538 miles so need only 23 miles to reach 2,726 for the year as well as the most in a month in 9.5 years
  • 12/31/2013 — last chance for miles this year and I have a long 10:30 appointment in Santa Barbara so I jump up and take an early ride to SB for breakfast and carefully log 24 miles to total 2,727 miles for the year (looks nicer and more balanced than 2,726 no?) and 562 for the month, the highest total since July of 2006

  • Ah, but tomorrow is another day, another month, another year 🙂
  • Happy and safe riding to all in 2014!

$1.10 for 52 miles of sun and fun, such a deal

I took the 9:10 21X bus (X for eXpress) from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara this morning then 10 minutes later was on the 12X heading to Goleta. This 25 miles cost me 55 cents and placed me right in downtown Goleta at 10:15.
I rode out Cathedral Oaks to it’s end then took the 101 to the Gaviota Tunnel. With some stops and exploring I returned to the Camino Real Marketplace, had a late lunch at the Kahuna Grill, then reversed the 12X -> 21X for another 55 cents to arrive home at 5:15 PM. What a nice and cheap adventure.

I rode down to Ventura for lunch today with the goal of finding the contractor imprints in the section of the old highway that is still preserved through Emma Wood State Beach. Sure enough I found 6 or 7 of them and took a shot of one of the better preserved ones. It was an amazing day with temperatures in the mid 70’s and high surf drawing out scads of surfers as well as other folks to enjoy it. Click on the montage to start an eight image slideshow of my outing.

Friend Christy included me in her annual Winter Solstice hike this morning. Seven of us met at the end of Tunnel Road shortly after six for a hike to a secret spot of Christy’s near Inspiration Point. It was wonderful walking along as the day commenced and the light unfolded. We arrived at our destination in time to see the sun crest the mountain and thereafter share some wishes for the new year while drinking the warm Oregon Chai Christy had packed up the hill.

Click on the image above for some larger shots of our outing. Thanks Christy and friends for a lovely start to the return of the light.
